How To Tell If You Have Wavy or Curly Hair - The Five Signs

Have you ever wondered if your hair might actually be wavy or curly, instead of straight? Here are five signs you might have waves or curls, and you should try a curly hair routine:

1. Your hair dries frizzy or has lots of flyaways.
2. Hair looks wavy or curly when it's wet, but looks straight when it’s dry.
3. Your hair gets bigger when you brush it.
4. Heat doesn’t make your hair totally straight.
5. Your hair is naturally dry.

1. Does your hair dry frizzy or have lots of flyaways?

This could be a sign you have curly or wavy textured hair. Wavy and curly hair is more prone to frizz, especially in humid conditions. Think Monica in Friends - “It’s the humidity!” If you’ve been battling with frizz and don’t know how to tame it, it may be time you tried a curly hair routine and see the difference it makes.

2. Hair looks wavy or curly when it's wet, but looks straight when it’s dry.

When the hair is wet, our true curl pattern tends to come out. If you then brush the hair or blow dry it, this pulls the hair straight so the waves and curls drop out.

Try combing your hair in the shower when it’s soaking wet, then scrunch your hair into wet curl clumps. Don’t brush it again, and instead let your hair air dry or use a diffuser attachment on your hairdryer to dry your hair and see if you have any hidden waves or curls. You may be surprised how wavy/curly your hair actually is!

3. Does your hair get bigger when you brush it?

Brushing curly hair when it’s dry creates more volume and frizz, making the hair bigger and poofier, rather than smooth and sleek. Have you ever despaired that your hair looks more messy after brushing than before? Then you might have curly hair!

4. Heat doesn’t make your hair totally straight.

Blow drying and straightening the hair may last for a little while, but with wavy and curly hair the frizz and kinks soon reappear. This is especially when there’s any moisture in the air. Do you notice after a few hours that your hair isn’t just as straight? Or do you step out in the rain and all the efforts of straightening your hair is undone? Do you have stubborn kinks in the hair that refuse to straighten? It sounds like you have curls that need a different styling routine.

5. Does your hair crave moisture?

Curly hair is naturally drier than straight hair, so adding moisture is essential. If your hair feels dry and unmanageable, you may have waves or curls just waiting to be embraced! Only Curls products are designed to be moisturising and nourishing on waves and curls. They’re also lightweight, so they won’t feel heavy or sticky on your hair.

If any or all of the above apply to you, you should try treating your hair like it's curly and you won’t believe the difference it will make.
